Mitchell Wong, M.D., Ph.D.

A Short Biography:

Dr. Mitchell Wong is a Professor of Medicine at UCLA in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research and Executive Vice Chair of Medical Research Training in the Department of Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from Williams College in 1989 and his medical degree from UC San Francisco in 1994. He obtained his clinical training in General Internal Medicine at The New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center. After completing a PhD in Health Services Research from the UCLA School of Public Health, he joined the UCLA faculty in 2001. Dr. Wong is co-director of the Education Core of the UCLA CTSI, Director of the CTSI KL2 Program, Executive co-Director of the UCLA Specialty Training and Advanced Research (STAR) Program, and co-Director of the UCLA NRSA Primary Care Fellowship. In these roles, he mentors and oversees the research training for over 60 fellows and junior faculty members across the spectrum of science including basic science, clinical trials and translational research, and health services research. His research focuses on racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in health care and outcomes, population health, demography and how disparities arise over the life course. He has developed the Racial/Ethnic Disparities Simulation Model, a Markov model, which simulates multiple chronic diseases over the life course for a cohort of adults. This model simulates the effectiveness of various clinical or public health strategies to improve health and reduce mortality for a given population. He has published in the New England Journal of Medicine examining the causes contributing to educational disparities in life expectancy. His most recent research examines the impact of effective charter school programs on adolescent health and health behaviors. He has received funding from NIH, the American Cancer Society, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
