Richard Pietras, M.D., Ph.D.

A Short Biography:

Dr. Richard Pietras earned his MD and PhD degrees at UCLA. Later, he completed a Residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the UCLA Medical Center. He is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. To date, Dr. Pietras has contributed more than 100 research publications, and this work has received more than 12,000 citations in the medical literature. His research work has focused largely on the biology and treatment of women's cancers, with an aim toward translation of basic research findings to the clinic. His work on hormones and HER-2 growth factor receptors in human breast cancer contributed to the preclinical and clinical development of novel targeted therapies, such as Herceptin, for breast cancer. More recently, Dr. Pietras has devoted his efforts to developing new treatments for hormone-resistant breast cancer and to understanding the role of estrogen and growth factor receptors in lung cancer in women. His laboratory and clinical work has been supported by research grants from federal agencies as well private foundations. Dr. Pietras was honored to be selected as Director of the Stiles Program in Integrative Oncology at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCLA. He has lectured at many national and international scientific meetings and has received many awards from professional and academic organizations for his research contributions.
