Detailed Biography:

Susan L. Ettner is Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research in the UCLA Department of Medicine and in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Fielding UCLA School of Public Health. She also serves as an Associate Dean in the UCLA Graduate Division. Dr. Ettner obtained her Ph.D. in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1991. She was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School in the Department of Health Care Policy prior to joining UCLA in 1999. Dr. Ettner was the 2001 recipient of AcademyHealth’s Alice S. Hersch New Investigator Award. Dr. Ettner's research interests include mental health and substance abuse policy and services research; natural experiments in diabetes; HIV services; insurance markets; reciprocity in the relationship of health and labor market outcomes; and long-term and post-acute care. She has taught the advanced research methods courses for the HPM doctoral students and is involved in a number of research projects. Most recently, Dr. Ettner led a NIDA-funded evaluation of the impact of the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), demonstrating that this landmark piece of legislation led to some improvements in insurance coverage and treatment for mental health and substance abuse conditions. Dr. Ettner is also a former Task Force member and legislative analyst for the California Health Benefits Review Program, which provides independent analyses of the medical, financial, and public health impacts of proposed health insurance benefit mandates.
