Kim-Lien Nguyen, M.D.

A Short Biography:

Dr. Nguyen received her Medical Doctorate from UCLA and is a practicing cardiologist. She served as a Longcope housestaff in the Osler Medicine training program at Johns Hopkins. After completion of her general cardiology fellowship at UCLA, she served as an imaging fellow in the advanced cardiovascular imaging section at NIH and returned to UCLA in the fall of 2013. Her goal is to transform healthcare through purpose-driven scholarship, discovery, innovation, and service. The distinguishing feature and common theme of her work has been to foster synergies among distinct disciplines and to bridge institutional differences to transform patient care.

As an early career investigator, Dr. Nguyen's research focuses on the development, translation, and application of cardiovascular imaging techniques. She collaborates with data scientist on the use of imaging data for advancement of precision medicine. Her work also intersects with wireless technology to integrate traditional and remote models of healthcare delivery. Her scientific work has been published in leading imaging journals and is sponsored by the American Heart Association, the Clinical Science Research & Development Section of the Veterans Health Administration, and the National Institutes of Health.

As an advocate for veterans' cardiovascular care, Dr. Nguyen developed and currently oversees the cardiac MRI program at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. She collaborates with VA stakeholders and investigators to facilitate veterans' access to state-of-the art cardiac imaging technology and cardiovascular clinical trials. As a former director of the telecardiology clinic at VA Greater Los Angeles, Dr. Nguyen continues to promote the integration of telemedicine with traditional models of healthcare delivery to improve veterans' access to cardiovascular care. As a joint faculty member, Dr. Nguyen advocates for substantive contributions by physicians, trainees, and staff traversing both university and VA medical centers to change the VA culture.

As a rising leader in healthcare, Dr. Nguyen is a commentator on issues relating to healthcare delivery and medical education. Her writing has been published in the general media including Forbes, USA Today, and STAT News.
