Jorge Artaza, Ph.D.

A Short Biography:

Jorge N. Artaza, M.S., Ph.D. Associate Professor, step III, Department of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Artaza received his M.S. degree in Biochemistry and his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology, both from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina. He was a Fellow at the Methodist Center for Reproduction and Transplantation Immunology at Dr. John McIntyre's laboratory, Methodist Hospital of Indiana (IN) where he was trained in Histocompatibility and Immunology of pregnancy. He was a visiting scientist at UCLA in a training program in Histocompatibility, Molecular biology, DNA oligotyping, and PCR technology at the UCLA/Tissue Typing Laboratory, directed by Dr. Paul I. Terasaki. From 1994 to 1999, Dr. Artaza worked independently as a hematologist / immunologist at various prestigious institutions in Buenos Aires, Argentina, such as the Israeli Hospital "Ezra", the Italian Hospital, and the Otamendi & Miroli hospital. At that time, he was also teaching Hematology at the School of Medicine & Biochemistry within the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). In 1999, Dr. Artaza was awarded the "Rene Thalman" Fellowship that was supported by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and the Department of Endocrinology at Charles Drew University, School of Medicine & Science, Los Angeles, CA (CDU). From 2003-2006 Dr. Artaza was a postdoctoral fellow at the division of Endocrinology, directed by Dr. Shalender Bhasin. He is the recipient of numerous awards such as the Glenn Foundation Endocrinology and Aging Grant Award (Endocrine Society), the Glaxo Smith-Kline Endocrinology Scholar Award (AFMR), Endocrinology Scholar Award (AFMR) and the Travel Grant Award (Endocrine Society, RCMI and NIH Summit). Dr. Artaza also holds professional memberships at the AFMR (American Federation for Medical Research) since 2004, and at The Royal Society of Medicine in the UK since 2017. In 2015, Dr. Artaza was awarded the "UK Society for Endocrinology's Journal Award", for the best paper published in Journal of Molecular Endocrinology.

Research Interest:

Fibrosis is a leading cause of organ failure and inflammation worldwide. Understanding the mechanisms that lead or prevent fibrosis will allow easier and more practical therapies to ameliorate this Multi-System Pathology (MSP). Our results indicate that vitamin D induces the promotion of an anti-inflammatory/anti-fibrotic phenotype in mesenchymal multipotent cells suggesting that vitamin D supplementation could be a valid anti-inflammatory/ fibrosis strategy in therapeutic treatment of chronic diseases such as renal or cardiac fibrosis. Our goal is to develop a therapeutically approach more easily translatable to the clinic and in that respect, we have identified factors or genes such as myostatin, follistatin and vitamin D that can be responsible for promoting or inhibiting fibrosis. We are also interested in the mechanism of myogenic and cardiac differentiation mediated by Vitamin D supplementation.
