Percy Lee, M.D.

A Short Biography:

Dr. Percy Lee is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Radiation Oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. He serves as the Residency Training Program Director as well as the Director for the Medical Student Clerkship. Dr. Lee attended the Johns Hopkins University and graduated with the highest honors majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Chemical Engineering. He attended Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-MIT Health Science and Technology program (HST) where he received his M.D., and graduated Magna cum laude. At Harvard, he was also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute fellow. He interned at the Massachusetts General Hospital and received specialty training in Radiation Oncology from Stanford University School of Medicine.

In 2008, Dr. Lee was recruited to join the faculty at UCLA. He is the founding and current Clinical Director of the Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) program where highly focused and intensified doses of radiation therapy is given precisely in a few treatments (1-5) with excellent outcomes. He is a leading national and international expert in this approach utilizing therapeutic radiation to ablate tumors throughout the body. Dr. Lee is the Chief of Service for the Thoracic and GI Radiation Oncology programs in the department. UCLA is currently the home of the 3rd system in the world for MRI-guided radiation therapy, and Dr. Lee is intimately involved in leading the development and clinical implementation of this novel and cutting-edge technology. This technology utilizes real-time MRI-guidance in order to treat mobile tumors throughout the body as well as allows for personalization of the radiation therapy immediately prior to each treatment.

Dr. Lee has an international reputation in the treatment of thoracic and GI cancers and has published more than 150 original peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters. Three of these articles have been selected as CME articles due to their importance in current clinical practice. He is frequently invited to speak at conferences throughout the world on these topics and topics related to the clinical implementation of advanced radiation technology. He has received numerous awards for his clinical and research accomplishments through his career. Dr. Lee serves as the Co-Chair for an important national task group (AAPM HYTEC) that is gathering evidence and providing summary statements for the clinical radiation oncology community on optimal ways to deliver ablative doses of radiotherapy to maximize cure rates for early stage lung cancer. On a personal note, Dr. Lee is a native of Arcadia, California, a suburb of Los Angeles County. It has been his long-time aspiration to practice radiation oncology near his hometown and to serve the communities that he has grown fond of.
