A Short Biography:

Anthony Butch, PhD, DABCC, MT(ASCP), is Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he has been working since 1999. Dr. Butch is Medical Director of Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology and Endocrinology at the Medical Center, and is also Director of the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, a facility that performs testing to detect athlete doping in Olympic, college and professional sports. He also directs a separate Clinical Immunology Laboratory. Dr. Butch has authored >100 scientific articles, reviews, book chapters and abstracts. He is a member of numerous scientific societies and editorial boards, and is a reviewer for numerous journals. Dr. Butch has been an active member of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry since 1989, and has chaired/participated in educational activities, including edutraks, workshops, and roundtables. He lectures to medical students, fellows, residents on clinical chemistry and immunology.

Detailed Biography:

Anthony W. Butch is a cellular immunologist and clinical chemist/toxicologist who has been a member of the UCLA School of Medicine faculty since joining the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in 1999. He became full professor in 2006 and has been the medical director of clinical chemistry & toxicology at the UCLA Medical Center, and director of a independent CLIA-licensed, CAP-certified Clinical Immunology Laboratory located in the School of Medicine since joining UCLA. He is also director of the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, the largest World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratory, which performs drug testing to detect doping in sports at all levels of competition including the Olympics, college, high school, and professional sports. Dr. Butch received his BS in Medical Technology from Wayne State University, completed an internship at Oakwood Hospital (Dearborn, MI), and worked as an ASCP-registered medical technologist for 6 years. He then obtained his MS and PhD in Immunology from Wayne State University and was a postdoctoral fellow in Clinical Chemistry and Immunology at Washington University. His research activities are centered on improving methods to detect doping in sports in order to stay ahead of cheaters who take advantage of new drug developments to gain a competitive edge. In addition, Dr. Butch is interested in the characterization of assays to evaluate immune function and the development of novel protein immunoassays to detect disease.
