Antronette Yancey, M.D., M.P.H.

A Short Biography:

Toni (Antronette K.) Yancey, MD, MPH is currently a professor in the Department of Health Services, UCLA School of Public Health, and is Co-Director of the UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity. Dr. Yancey's primary research interests are in chronic disease prevention, with a focus on organizational practice and policy change, and adolescent health promotion. She returned to academia full-time in 2001 after five years in public health practice, first as Director of Public Health for the city of Richmond, VA, and as Director of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Dr. Yancey has authored more than 125 scientific publications, including briefs, book chapters, health promotion videos, and among those, 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and editorials. She has generated $30 million in extramural funds, including four NIH independent investigator (R01, R24) awards as principal investigator. She serves on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Standing Committee on Childhood Obesity Prevention, and National Physical Activity Plan Coordinating Committee. From 2007-2009, during the CEO transition after retirement of the founder, she chaired the Board of Directors of the Oakland, CA-based Public Health Institute.

 Dr. Yancey completed her undergraduate studies in biochemistry and molecular biology at Northwestern University where she was a starting center on the varsity basketball team, her medical degree at Duke, and her preventive medicine residency/MPH at UCLA. She is a poet/spoken word artist published in the public health journals, Preventive Medicine and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and in several newspapers. Her first book, a poetry and art "coffee table" collection An Old Soul with a Young Spirit: Poetry in the era of desegregation recovery, was published in 1997 and sold out of its first printing of 2000. Her spoken word music CD Renaissance Woman/Race Woman, was released in 2001. Since 2006, Dr. Yancey has been a public health commentator for the local NPR affiliate, KPCC. Her second book, Instant Recess: How to Build a Fit Nation for the 21st Century (University of California Press, Berkeley, CA), was released in November 2010, with accolades from Sen. Tom Harkin, former Surgeon Gen. David Satcher, Food Politics author Marion Nestle, Hall of Famer Dave Winfield, and Diabesity author Fran Kaufman. Her work has been featured on PBS Tavis Smiley Show, NPR, ESPN, ABC, BET, CBS, BBC Radio, and Reuter's, and in Time, Newsweek, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, La Opinion, Wall St. Journal, and Investor's Business Daily.
