A Short Biography:

Prof. Hong Zhou has a PhD degree in biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine (1995) and MS and BS degrees in physics from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He also received advanced training in computational sciences and mathematics. Dr. Zhou is a leader in the field of cryo-electron microscopy and the founding director of the UCLA cryoEM facility - the Electron Imaging Center for NanoMachines, based in the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI). His research focuses on the structural and functional studies of large molecular complexes, viruses and cellular michineries using cryo-electron microscopy and related biophysical means as the primary tools.

Detailed Biography:

Z. Hong Zhou, Ph. D. Professor Hong Zhou is a Professor in UCLA's Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics department. Dr. Zhou's research centers on studying the assembly and structures of macromolecular complexes, viruses and cellular machineries using cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryoET). He also developed cryoEM and computational methods for structure determination at atomic resolution. To this end, he combines expertise in structural biology, virology, microbiology, computational biology, and bioinformatics. Dr. Zhou was a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences, received numerous awards, including the Basil O'Connor Scholar Award, the Established Investigator Award of American Heart Association, the Burton award, and the KH Kuo Award of Distinguished Scientist.
